As more grandchildren and young adults care about/wish to be involved in caregiving for the older adults they love, there is a need for support, advice and resources tailored to this younger demographic of caregivers. For my thoughts on the subject, watch this recording of a Google Hangout chat with Laura Hahn of arthurandbernie.com and Denise Brown of Caregiving.com, who also shared their perspectives and insights.
Michelle, I so enjoyed hearing from you and Laura Hahn about your caregiving experiences with grandparents in this video with Denise Brown. When I was a young adult in my twenties, my husband and I had a marvelous old Russian friend who became our honorary grandfather. When he lost both legs to diabetes we visited often and I’d shop for groceries or cook. And then, not long after, I was with him in the hospital the night before he died. It’s that kind of connection that makes me glad to be a professional caregiver and elder companion now, as well as an elder-care blogger. It’s Joyous Paradox [dot] com, if you’d like to visit.
MaryAnn, thanks for this lovely comment! I’m glad you found the video and enjoyed watching & listening. Thanks for sharing the story about your honorary Russian grandfather. I love stories like that! What a very special connection and I totally understand what you mean by it — I remember spending hospital time at the end-of life with a few different people from the senior living communities I worked at and they are times/people I’ll always treasure. I am definitely going to check out your site. Thanks again for stopping by mine and saying hello!
