In my latest post for GreatCall, I highlight the benefits of using a medical alert device, the first of which being the prevention of a fatal fall. But caregivers could greatly benefit from a PERS (personal emergency response system) too.
Consider this scenario: A caregiver goes upstairs to use the bathroom. His wife, who has dementia, is downstairs watching TV. While in the bathroom, the man has a stroke, falls, and is unable to reach a phone to call for help. And of course, in the case of a neurologic injury like a stroke, every second counts.
We often think of a person with dementia, or a person we consider frail, as the one who needs the PERS. But in cases like these, it’s equally important, if not more so, for the caregiver to have one too.

Thanks for sharing, at Telehealth we also provide medical alert devices and we cannot encourage them enough. They enable seniors to stay in their homes longer and at the same time ensure that if there is ever an accident or emergency where they can’t reach the phone etc. that they still can get expert help right away. The benefits are innumerable and mean that your seniors can enjoy their freedom with peace of mind.
Of course! I agree. Medical alert devices should not be seen as a hindrance to independence but a means of promoting it, and their benefits stretch well beyond the individual living alone or in need of support. Thanks for your comment!
