Incontinence products aren’t just for older adults, and there’s a variety of reasons a person may need incontinence products at some point in their life.
Sometimes, it’s a short-term need, like after surgery or childbirth, or due to an infection or medication. But for some individuals, the need for incontinence products is long-term.
Whether’s it’s caused by dementia or diabetes, stroke or special needs, MS or mental health disorders, incontinence represents a challenge for caregivers and the person with the diagnosis, as it impacts daily life in many ways:
- independence
- confidence
- hygiene
- intimacy
- physical activity
- socialization
For the caregiver, incontinence adds another layer of coordination and planning. It’s another supply to order and keep in stock, and another thing to consider when taking a caree to a doctor’s appointment—besides the higher level of hands-on care required. And of course: more laundry!
If incontinence is part of your daily caregiving life, know that you’re not alone. It affects 25 million Americans—men and women alike—and 200 million worldwide (according to the National Association for Continence).
One of our Caregiving Advice sponsors, EGOSAN, has a variety of incontinence products for men and women available on Amazon—which, bonus, makes it easy to order & reorder! (Fingers crossed: no more midnight runs to Target or Walmart!) Also, their packaging is discreet, so when it shows up at your home or elsewhere, there’s no indication that it’s an incontinence product.
They also have a comprehensive blog with stories from people of all ages (including teens) who live with incontinence. And they recently launched an Incontinence Support Group on Facebook.
If you or a caree are in the early stages of bladder control issues, they offer a lightweight incontinence pad. If overnight incontinence is an issue, disposable bed pads are available too. This is something we could use at home, as my daughter with special needs uses pull-ups when sleeping and we frequently have leakage problems. Which means: more laundry for this caregiver-mama, and the need for a shower during the already busy “get to the bus in time” morning routine.

The most challenging part is finding and trusting the products. They are also prohibitively expensive. I have relied on feedback and input from a support group which has been helpful. Also being required to sign up for subscriptions when you just want a sample to see if the product is effective.
Great points. Glad you have found a helpful support group!
I hope I can get the help I need in getting help with my leak problem that I have that sounds too good to be true and getting a package in the mail
How can I help, Dianna? Thanks for sharing your concerns.
